CONTROL's Vinyl LP Coming This Month!

All of the tracks from our 3-EP project with experimental/post-rock trio CONTROL have been remastered and are currently being pressed onto vinyl! See Store page for details!!!! This is a limited press of 200 records, so reserve your copy today!

"The spiky urgency of Gang Of Four is blended with the hardcore punk of The Minutemen and progressive overtones courtesy of King Crimson, topped with the post-hardcore experimenting of Fugazi. The result isn't for the faint-hearted and the intricate guitar shredding adds a hectic, desperate twist to the otherwise spacious soundscapes. When the drums follow suit they create a potent and forceful sound which also incorporates enough melody and light to stop things turning too muddy. If you like your music spirited, powerful and exploratory, then CONTROL should be right up your street."

CONTROL's Third EP "Longino, K" Coming December 18th!

The third piece of CONTROL's art/music project is set for release on December 18th.

Longino, K features four more tracks from the Madison 3-piece whose angular, experimental sound is best described with the phrase: "The unaimed arrow never misses." Fans of White Denim, The Minutemen and King Krimson should dig it. You can hear a sample track now on our Store page Store page as well as on Bandcamp. And of course you can pre-order from both!

As with the other two EPs, Longino, K will be available both digitally and on limited-edition cassette, with the visual work/packaging for this one designed by artist Kevin Longino. Limited-edition screen prints of the cover are also available for order.

*In early 2013, all three EPs will be pressed to vinyl and will include prints of the art (3 total) from each EP! This is a pre-order option using the options on any of the EPs on our store page and/or on Bandcamp.

Here is how The Sound of Confusion described CONTROL's second EP, Schulte, A:

This trio from Madison, Wisconsin describe their sound as "post everything", but if that's a little vague for you then it may be better to label them as intense, instrumental post-rock, piled high with angular, math-rock guitars. Now that may seem a complex tag to place on CONTROL, but if you have a listen to this, you'll find that the noise they make is equally complex and not easy to categorize. Influence-wise they cite, amongst others, King Crimson, The Minutemen, Gang Of Four and Fugazi, and true to their word scraps of those bands can be heard throughout 'Schulte, A'.

The spiky urgency of Gang Of Four is blended with the hardcore punk of The Minutemen and progressive overtones courtesy of King Crimson, topped with the post-hardcore experimenting of Fugazi. The result isn't for the faint hearted and the intricate guitar shredding adds a hectic, desperate twist to the otherwise spacious soundscapes. When the drums follow suit they create a potent and forceful sound which also incorporates enough melody and light to stop things turning too muddy. If you like your music spirited, powerful and exploratory then CONTROL should be right up your street.

ICARUS HIMSELF TOUR STARTS TODAY!!!!

ICARUS HIMSELF heads out today for a 3-week tour! Please take a look at their schedule below and see If they are stopping in your city. If so, it'd be super swell of you to check them out! And... it'd be equally as swell of you to help spread the word about the tour!

The band is already on their second van and haven't left the driveway yet. But we refuse to believe the odds are against them. Currently they are loading up their gear and souls into the drummer's minivan and getting ready to hit the road, with some new IH t-shirts even.

Hopefully this time Nick doesn't accidentally leave Brad and Karl stranded at a McDonald's while he takes off for 20 miles thinking that Brad and Karl are sleeping in the pile of bedding in the back of the van.

GO ICARUS!!!!!

"Career Culture is a pensive listen that can mirror the greatness of Holopaw yet also channels the experimentalism of The Velvet Underground. Anyone with an eye toward atypical, compelling and often lo-fi song craft should take some time with this." -The Daily Vault

ICARUS HIMSELF Video Premier and Tour Dates!

Brite Revolution is hosting an exclusive video premiere of "Anywhere You Go" (off of Icarus Himself's Career Culture) along with an interview with Nick. The video is a collection of footage from 1980s televangelists and tent revivals...

"Pentecostal preachers seem to sing along with the lyrics, and when they cast out demons, the believers hit the floor to crashing cymbals and distorted chords in the video that baritone guitarist Karl Christenson pieced together from footage found online."

ICARUS HIMSELF headed to Wisconsin Public Television's studio a couple of weeks ago to record a solid set for 30-Minute Music Hour which can now be viewed online. They played a lil' somethin' from each release ("Wake Up" + "MCO" + "On Your Side" from 2011's Career Culture, "Digging Holes" + "Mexico" from 2010's Mexico EP and "Coffins" from 2009's Coffins), and partook in a mid-set interview by Mr. Andy Moore. SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY'S - Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel - Coming Out Soon on Vinyl!!!!

We released this gem back in 2008, but stupidly only on CD. Why it's the only SITA full-length (the second out of 4 total) that we hadn't pressed on vinyl is a very good question, but one that won't need to be asked much longer... becaaaaause.... it's coming very soon! The test presses are in our hands and the artwork pieces are at the plant, so now all we have to do is come up with a release date.... whiiiiiich..... we will share with you shortly! We'll get set up for pre-orders soon as well, so stay tuned as you'll want to get your Vomit while it's hot!

---------------

Beating on pawn-shop acoustic guitars and trashcan lids while whooping it up about all the joys and pains of being young, dumb and awkward, this ramshackle four-piece takes its cue from fellow Wisconsin misfits the Violent Femmes on its sophomore album. At times, Expensive Vomit In A Cheap Hotel's lo-fi shittiness is so raw it sounds like the band is busking in a high-school bathroom, but somehow the wheels stay on this mess of charming melodies and mischievous wit. - MAGNET Magazine, Best of 2008: Hidden Treasures

The second album by Sleeping in the Aviary is a balancing act: The band has perfected the art of teetering between the frenzy of an unpolished living-room performance and the coherence of an intricately composed folk-pop song played by a group of skilled musicians. (The album) revolves around the quivering vocals of Elliott Kozel, whose voice and sense of melody recall Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes at some points and an old West Band blues musician at others. In fact, the whole band sounds like they could be from another time, with instruments like the accordion, saw, and ukulele adding to the organic, porch-swinging feel. - City Pages

What dewy tenderfeet get from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, the weathered gimp who writes this column gets from Vernon's fellow Wisconsinite Elliott Kozel. Kozel leads actual band members, second fiddle though their bass-drums-accordion/saw may play, and sings like a 14-year-old freaked out by the frog in his throat rather than an angel choking his monkey. Informed by two untimely deaths as well as a Kanye-like combo of ailing mother and fractured romance, Kozel is feeling his mortality more concretely than the average young guy struck by the fact that 25 years equals a quarter of a century. Over a bereft, sardonic, punky power strum, he spins out songs that evoke the nearness of death and the fragility of romance all the more suggestively for not being quite literal about either, which is rarely how it works with tenderfoot image-slingers these days. First he's running around with his girl in the ground, then he's helping his mom with her shot. Both ways he feels terribly alone but knows he isn't. MSN Inside Music: Consumer Guide

Opting for a heavily acoustic-based, playful indie folk affair that sounds like Jeff Mangum listening to a shitload of Bob Dylan before recording In the Aeroplane Over the Sea... Sleeping in the Aviary has released another superbly solid full-length, and consequently deserve way more notice than they seem to receive. Get on it, people. - Punk News

Their debut full-length...was a controlled chaos of warbled vocals, fast riffing, and sentiments of abjection. This year's Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel comes up with a similar thesis - but this time around, it's been filtered down to a level somewhere between post-psychotic folk music and a pre-apocalyptic drug addiction. For my money, this is a pure coclear joy. PRICK Magazine

Despite lyrically heavy content -- and the fact that this album was written the very same week frontman Elliott Kozel experienced the deaths of two close friends -- Expensive is nonetheless full of blithely charming up-tempo songs. At nearly 45 minutes long, the band's second album provides a pleasantly tailored listen throughout. While songs like "Write On" are incredibly infectious, other tunes, like "You're A Party," crescendo with polished nonchalance and delicacy. Then "Things Look Good" has a Dylan-esque vibe to it with a friendly harmonica, nostalgic gritty vocals and catchy guitar chords. Alternately somber, poignant, lively or even a bit waltzy, Expensive Vomit in A Cheap Hotel will leave you neither nauseous nor drowsy. CMJ New Music Report

Searching for a lo-fi Violent Femmes? Look no further than Sleeping in the Aviary, and their 2008 release, the charmingly titled Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel. Hailing from Madison, WI, Sleeping in the Aviary certainly possesses the same snotty charm as the aforementioned Femmes (circa their early era), especially in the vocal stylings of singer/guitarist Elliott Kozel, which can be heard clearly on the album opening "Write On." Elsewhere, you'll also find a Pixies-esque ditty ("Gas Mask Blues") and a haunting album closing ditty ("Windshield"). The trio keeps it bare-bones sounding throughout, as Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel sounds like it could have been recorded in your living room, with just a few mikes strewn around. And that is exactly the charm of Sleeping in the Aviary. - All Music Guide

You can stream the tracks (and purchase of course!) from Vomit on Bandcamp here. The vinyl will come with a download card to download the album plus some previously unreleased bonus tracks!

CONTROL's "Grabhorn, C." EP Release! / New ICARUS HIMSELF Video / SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY Perform in The Current Studio

November 15th marks the date for the digital release of CONTROL's new Grabhorn, C. EP! This EP includes four mostly-instrumental songs that slide between angular and aggressive to ambient and dub, best described with the phrase: "The unaimed arrow never misses." If ya want a "RIYL" comparison, we'll throw the names Minutemen, White Denim and Massacre out there.

Grabhorn, C. is the first volume in a three-part art/music project, with the idea being that each of three EPs will offer a handful of new songs as well as a 12" x 12" screen print of the cover, each created by a different designer. The EPs will be released both digitally and on limited-edition cassettes (100 of each), and then combined together at the end to press on vinyl, each copy stuffed with three art prints, one design from each EP.

Digital download for Grabhorn, C. can be obtained from Bandcamp.
The tracks will also be available on iTunes and other digital outlets very soon. To pre-order cassettes (release date: December 20th) and vinyl (release will be late 2012) visit our Store page. You can also order the screen print for Grabhorn, C. (created by designer Craig Grabhorn) through our website which is available now and will come with a download card for the EP.

Also, here's a new video of CONTROL playing live at Thorps in Madison. The video features a song called "Middle Brother Watches Younger Brother While Older Brother Goes Out." It will be on EP #2, which was just recorded this last weekend!

Madison release show for Grabhorn, C. is December 16 @ Dragonfly Lounge (below Bellini). FREE show with details on Facebook.

"Searching for a post-something genre tag to slap on Control's crisp guitar parts, frenetic bass lines, and polyrhythmic beats can generate a lot of confusion. Better to just enjoy one of the most dynamic bands in Madison" -A.V. Club, Madison

New SOS Band: CONTROL / Releases Coming Up This Fall / New Website In The Works

Hey! Hey! We've added another band to the roster! A most fantastic experimental 3-piece from right here in Madison called CONTROL. We don't quite know how we hadn't heard of them until recently, but were very surprised and amazed when we stumbled upon their live show. Their sound is kinda up the alley of Minutemen/Fugazi/Massacre with 2-3 minute songs packed with tons of parts/changes and constant cool shit going on between the three of them. Mostly instrumental with occasional, almost chant-like vocals. They'll be coming to our studio in Aug/Sept to begin recording for a series of EPs which we'll begin releasing this fall. More deets to follow. Very excited to have them aboard!
CONTROL on Facebook: www.facebook.com/wearecontrol
CONTROL's site/blog: wearecontrol.blogspot.com

Releases we have coming up this fall:
SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY: Forth full-length album. Status: Just finished mixing. Order of tracks still being pondered. Mastering soon.
ICARUS HIMSELF : "Career Culture" full-length album. Status: Tracking almost finished. Adding a few bells & whistles, as in, horns & keys.
RED PENS: 4 or 5-song EP. Status: An emergency surgery delayed things a bit, but still plugging away at finishing up the tracks.
CONTROL: Series of 3 EPs. Status: Coming to record in Aug/Sept.

And... we're working on a design for a new website, which will be much easier to navigate than this one. It will be snaaazz-ay. Stay tuned!

RED PENS Joins SOS / ICARUS HIMSELF & SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY Recording New Albums / SITA Tour Still Going

Well, golly gee, SOS has added a new band to the roster! Sometime this summer, we'll be releasing an EP from Minneapolis-based two-piece Red Pens! We played a show with them in Minneapolis some months back, and were blown away by their set. Super catchy songs with tons of delightful noise, executed with lots of energy and sweat. If I had to describe their sound in terms of band references, they make me think of a cross between Guided by Voices and The Jesus And Mary Chain. Here's City Pages' take: "Like The Pixies fed into a blender or My Bloody Valentine in a bad dream, Howard Hamilton and Laura Bennett whip up a sound so fierce, it's almost comical that only two people are contributing to its creation." At any rate, we're really excited about releasing something from them, and will have more details after they finish recording. They're set to start laying down tracks at a studio in Minneapolis in early April.

Here's a video of Red Pens' song "Baby Alligator" from their debut album, Reasons.

Laura of Red Pens is also a kick-ass artist, and has her paintings, as well as custom-made painted effects pedals available on her website: http://laurafbennettpainter.blogspot.com/

Icarus Himself is still in the SOS studio working on a full-length. From the tidbits I've heard, it's sounding really sweet, and they'll be finishing up tracking within the next month. Did you catch their session recorded for Daytrotter at the end of last year? If not, check it out here: http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/icarus-himself-concert/20040424-37382412.html

Sleeping in the Aviary also camped out in the SOS studio for a week last month and recorded a new album. They had just finished leg one of tour, and then headed back out for leg two. Looks like we'll have at least three releases this summer!

Icarus Himself "Mexico" Reviews / Sleeping in the Aviary - July 23 Madison Show / Upcoming Shows

ICARUS HIMSELF has been receiving some nice reviews on their Mexico EP. For the full reviews, click below the album cover on our Store page. Here are some highlights:

"Sounds of folk, disguised as electro-pop, disguised as psych rock, disguised as indie rock propel the release into a strength that's never foreboding. Whetro and his bandmates spin off as many fantastically drastic twists and modifications to thrill every sense." Delusions of Adequacy

"...squawky vocals prod along their electronic pulse, synthesizing constant static in an atmospheric storm that pierces your chest. Equal parts soothing and self-depracating, Icarus Himself lull listeners to about as much of a daze as a lightning bolt to the chest will allow." Examiner.com

"When pushed up against 2009's more singer-songwriter oriented 'Coffins,' Whetro's haunting vocal delivery sounds a bit more soulful and less forced this time around as he sparsely colors in the tiny arrangements of watery guitar, lo-fi keyboards and low-key rhythms... Sure, 'Mexico' tumbles into darker dives than its predecessor, but it may be Whetro's penchant for the morose and his leaning toward incorporating lo-fi electronics that help split him off of his over-orchestrated neo-folk peers." Onion A.V. Club

The scheduled release date is May 25th, but it's now available for pre-order on our Store page, where you can also sample a couple of tracks; "Digging Holes" and "Half Ton Load." inBOIL / MusicFloss / Icarus Himself Tour Dates

Pssst... have you heard there's another solo album out by a member of Sleeping in the Aviary? Phil Mahlstadt (SitA bassist) has a project called inBOIL which just self-released an awesome lo-fi folkish album that is quite a trip! We would tell you what the name of the record is, but each hand-packaged copy sports its own title on the back, ours being: Crying on the Outside. Visit inBOIL's MySpace page to hear a couple of the songs, and you can inquire about purchasing a copy by sending them a message.

On another note... we wanted to tell you about a brand new site called MusicFloss.com which offers digital downloads for sale (high-quality MP3 format), and allows artists to keep 100% of their revenue. Very cool! We just got all of our artists' downloadable material on there, and you can check out our page using this link: Science of Sound on MusicFloss.com. The site will go live early 2010.

And hey, Icarus Himself is heading out for a few dates in December, and also planning a longer tour for the Spring. Visit their MySpace page for updates at www.myspace.com/icarushimself and try to catch one of their shows if you can!

His & Her Vanities'
new album, The Mighty Lunge, has now officially been released! And of course you can purchase it on the Store page! Some reviews have already surfaced and are being compiled underneath the album cover on the Store page. Here are a few of the first comments:

His and Her Vanities, which started circa 2001 in Ricky and Terrin Riemer's Madison basement as a late-night side project to their married-with-children gig... Call H&HV's third album, "The Mighty Lunge," a punk record I guess, but the Riemers, drummer Sara Quigle, and rhythm guitarist Matt Abplanalp decorate their bouncy staccato sound with melodic new wave flourishes, like the rubber band guitars bending around driving, Thermals-esque opener "Hits Like Hail." Far-off pianos chime like glimmers of hope against lead singer Ricky's cries of "When will this cyclone ever end?" on "Wait It Out," a frustrated, hair-pulling pep talk that gets drowned out in the drums and guitars tumbling downhill. It's all coming apart on "The Mighty Lunge," and while H&HV don't arrive at any world-saving epiphanies in the album's brisk 30 minutes, what you do hear hits your weary heart like a booster shot. - Rocksposure (Read full review here)

His & Her Vanities tumbles and screeches into cleverly bent-up pop that shows a clear love for the jarring sounds of Brainiac and Enon. Most of HHV’s tunes, though, keep it a bit more sweet and catchy, not getting overly caught up in mechanical new-wave weirdness. That's especially true of the band's new third album, "The Mighty Lunge." It took five years of on-and-off work to complete...(but) the wait pays off emotionally in some of the band's most direct, accessible, and warm songs to date. - The Onion A.V. Club

On their 2002 self-titled debut album His & Her Vanities were more experimental, creating a record of beautiful, sonic chaos. Two years later they returned with "A Thought Process," which had a more stripped down, post-rock sound in comparison to the debut but never skimped on production. "The Mighty Lunge" is a perfect marriage of those two albums. At times it can be a seven layered cake of post-punk goodness and the next moment you’re attacked with a jagged guitar and bass beat down. With the album clocking in at just under thirty minutes it can prove to be one hell of a ride. - Dane101 (Read full review here)

We've got a couple of things in SOS news for you!!

First off... the third album by angular post-punk band, His & Her Vanities, "The Mighty Lunge," is coming out Oct. 20! Song samples and pre-order are now available on the Store page. H&HV will be celebrating with a release show in Madison on Oct. 17th at The Frequency. The show's at 10pm and cover is $5 (21+). H&HV will be playing first, followed by The Candeliers from Milwaukee, and then Sleeping in the Aviary!

Speaking of Sleeping in the Aviary, they're getting ready to play the CMJ 2009 music festival in NYC on Oct. 22 at Local 269, set time 10PM. Please help spread the word! The band will be stopping for a show in Fredonia, NY on the way to NYC, and in Brooklyn on the way back. Check our MySpace page for details.

Hey... SOS is now on Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and Last.fm. Check out the new links at the top of this page!

And if you haven't yet checked out our latest release, "Coffins" by Icarus Himself, please do so! You can listen to three whole songs on the Store page of our site!!! "If you want to get 'Coffins' in a single sound bite, try 'lost Bowie demo tape overdubbed with acid confessions.' That should warm you up for Whetro’s eleven-track, half-hour romp and prepare you for what first feels like alt-country experiments with a lunatic wailing at the back." - CokeMachineGlow

Thanks for checking in!!!
