We're all set to take pre-orders for SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY's Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel on VINYL! Orders can be placed through our website or Bandcamp, and will be shipped out on the release date which is: June 5th. And as a bonus, the 12 fiery freak-folk songs, plus four previously-unreleased tracks will be available with album download (download card included with vinyl purchase)!

ICARUS HIMSELF headed to Wisconsin Public Television's studio a couple of weeks ago to record a solid set for 30-Minute Music Hour which can now be viewed online. They played a lil' somethin' from each release ("Wake Up" + "MCO" + "On Your Side" from 2011's Career Culture, "Digging Holes" + "Mexico" from 2010's Mexico EP and "Coffins" from 2009's Coffins), and partook in a mid-set interview by Mr. Andy Moore. Icarus Himself will be hitting the road for a few weeks in July to tour the Midwest, and we'll post some dates in the near future!

And also, our friends THE HUSSY have a new record coming out soon entitled Weed Seizure (Tic Tac Totally), and they will be touring the Midwest in support of the album. As you may remember, we had the privilege of releasing a split 7" from The Hussy and Sleeping in the Aviary in 2009 which sold out, but you can still get the digital tracks (see below). SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY'S - Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel - Coming Out Soon on Vinyl!!!!

We released this gem back in 2008, but stupidly only on CD. Why it's the only SITA full-length (the second out of 4 total) that we hadn't pressed on vinyl is a very good question, but one that won't need to be asked much longer... becaaaaause.... it's coming very soon! The test presses are in our hands and the artwork pieces are at the plant, so now all we have to do is come up with a release date.... whiiiiiich..... we will share with you shortly! We'll get set up for pre-orders soon as well, so stay tuned as you'll want to get your Vomit while it's hot!

Beating on pawn-shop acoustic guitars and trashcan lids while whooping it up about all the joys and pains of being young, dumb and awkward, this ramshackle four-piece takes its cue from fellow Wisconsin misfits the Violent Femmes on its sophomore album. At times, Expensive Vomit In A Cheap Hotel's lo-fi shittiness is so raw it sounds like the band is busking in a high-school bathroom, but somehow the wheels stay on this mess of charming melodies and mischievous wit. - MAGNET Magazine, Best of 2008: Hidden Treasures

The second album by Sleeping in the Aviary is a balancing act: The band has perfected the art of teetering between the frenzy of an unpolished living-room performance and the coherence of an intricately composed folk-pop song played by a group of skilled musicians. (The album) revolves around the quivering vocals of Elliott Kozel, whose voice and sense of melody recall Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes at some points and an old West Band blues musician at others. In fact, the whole band sounds like they could be from another time, with instruments like the accordion, saw, and ukulele adding to the organic, porch-swinging feel. - City Pages

What dewy tenderfeet get from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, the weathered gimp who writes this column gets from Vernon's fellow Wisconsinite Elliott Kozel. Kozel leads actual band members, second fiddle though their bass-drums-accordion/saw may play, and sings like a 14-year-old freaked out by the frog in his throat rather than an angel choking his monkey. Informed by two untimely deaths as well as a Kanye-like combo of ailing mother and fractured romance, Kozel is feeling his mortality more concretely than the average young guy struck by the fact that 25 years equals a quarter of a century. Over a bereft, sardonic, punky power strum, he spins out songs that evoke the nearness of death and the fragility of romance all the more suggestively for not being quite literal about either, which is rarely how it works with tenderfoot image-slingers these days. Opting for a heavily acoustic-based, playful indie folk affair that sounds like Jeff Mangum listening to a shitload of Bob Dylan before recording In the Aeroplane Over the Sea... Sleeping in the Aviary has released another superbly solid full-length, and consequently deserve way more notice than they seem to receive. Get on it, people. - Punk News

Their debut full-length...was a controlled chaos of warbled vocals, fast riffing, and sentiments of abjection. This year's Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel comes up with a similar thesis - but this time around, it's been filtered down to a level somewhere between post-psychotic folk music and a pre-apocalyptic drug addiction. Despite lyrically heavy content -- and the fact that this album was written the very same week frontman Elliott Kozel experienced the deaths of two close friends -- Expensive is nonetheless full of blithely charming up-tempo songs. At nearly 45 minutes long, the band's second album provides a pleasantly tailored listen throughout. While songs like "Write On" are incredibly infectious, other tunes, like "You're A Party," crescendo with polished nonchalance and delicacy. Searching for a lo-fi Violent Femmes? Look no further than Sleeping in the Aviary, and their 2008 release, the charmingly titled Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel. Hailing from Madison, WI, Sleeping in the Aviary certainly possesses the same snotty charm as the aforementioned Femmes (circa their early era), especially in the vocal stylings of singer/guitarist Elliott Kozel, which can be heard clearly on the album opening "Write On." Elsewhere, you'll also find a Pixies-esque ditty ("Gas Mask Blues") and a haunting album closing ditty ("Windshield"). The trio keeps it bare-bones sounding throughout, as Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel sounds like it could have been recorded in your living room, with just a few mikes strewn around. CONTROL's "Grabhorn, C." EP Release! / New ICARUS HIMSELF Video / SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY Perform in The Current Studio

November 15th marks the date for the digital release of CONTROL's new Grabhorn, C. EP! This EP includes four mostly-instrumental songs that slide between angular and aggressive to ambient and dub, best described with the phrase: "The unaimed arrow never misses." If ya want a "RIYL" comparison, we'll throw the names Minutemen, White Denim and Massacre out there.

Grabhorn, C. is the first volume in a three-part art/music project, with the idea being that each of three EPs will offer a handful of new songs as well as a 12" x 12" screen print of the cover, each created by a different designer. The EPs will be released both digitally and on limited-edition cassettes (100 of each), and then combined together at the end to press on vinyl, each copy stuffed with three art prints, one design from each EP.

The tracks will also be available on iTunes and other digital outlets very soon. To pre-order cassettes (release date: December 20th) and vinyl (release will be late 2012) visit our Store page. The 3-piece beast known as CONTROL has finally hit the SOS studio to kick-off a series of three EP's we will be releasing hopefully beginning in November. New SOS Band: CONTROL / Releases Coming Up This Fall / New Website In The Works

Hey! Hey! We've added another band to the roster! A most fantastic experimental 3-piece from right here in Madison called CONTROL. We don't quite know how we hadn't heard of them until recently, but were very surprised and amazed when we stumbled upon their live show. Their sound is kinda up the alley of Minutemen/Fugazi/Massacre with 2-3 minute songs packed with tons of parts/changes and constant cool shit going on between the three of them. Mostly instrumental with occasional, almost chant-like vocals. They'll be coming to our studio in Aug/Sept to begin recording for a series of EPs which we'll begin releasing this fall. More deets to follow. Very excited to have them aboard!

RED PENS Joins SOS / ICARUS HIMSELF & SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY Recording New Albums / SITA Tour Still Going

Well, golly gee, SOS has added a new band to the roster! Sometime this summer, we'll be releasing an EP from Minneapolis-based two-piece Red Pens! We played a show with them in Minneapolis some months back, and were blown away by their set. Super catchy songs with tons of delightful noise, executed with lots of energy and sweat. If I had to describe their sound in terms of band references, they make me think of a cross between Guided by Voices and The Jesus And Mary Chain. Here's City Pages' take: "Like The Pixies fed into a blender or My Bloody Valentine in a bad dream, Howard Hamilton and Laura Bennett whip up a sound so fierce, it's almost comical that only two people are contributing to its creation." At any rate, we're really excited about releasing something from them, and will have more details after they finish recording. They're set to start laying down tracks at a studio in Minneapolis in early April.

Icarus Himself "Mexico" EP / Sleeping in the Aviary Making New Album + Videos / Upcoming Shows

ICARUS HIMSELF's "Mexico" EP is almost here! The scheduled release date is May 25th, but it's now available for pre-order on our Store page, where you can also sample a couple of tracks; "Digging Holes" and "Half Ton Load." The band explores more of their electronic side on this release, incorporating more keyboards, organs and drum machine into the songs than on last year's "Coffins," so expect it to be a bit different, but still great stuff! We should be getting the discs in very shortly, and will send pre-orders as soon as we do. The release show is May 21st at The Frequency in Madison. Details:

SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY is more than halfway finished recording their new album, and we're getting eager to hear some samples of it soon! The photo to the right is the attic in Minneapolis where all of the magic has been taking place. We're hoping to unleash this third release this summer. Also, the band is about to start shooting a series of videos with Minneapolis filmmaker Sam Thompson, and from what we've heard, they are going to be quite unique. SITA has been busy hand-making giant props for the videos in between recording sessions, which sounds like a blast. More details when we have them!

We got word that Sleeping in the Aviary is now all properly set up in a Minneapolis attic and ready to start working on their third album. There are also some really exciting plans for a video project. Stay tuned!

Pssst... have you heard there's another solo album out by a member of Sleeping in the Aviary? Phil Mahlstadt (SitA bassist) has a project called inBOIL which just self-released an awesome lo-fi folkish album that is quite a trip! We would tell you what the name of the record is, but each hand-packaged copy sports its own title on the back, ours being: Crying on the Outside. Visit inBOIL's MySpace page to hear a couple of the songs, and you can inquire about purchasing a copy by sending them a message.

On another note... we wanted to tell you about a brand new site called MusicFloss.com which offers digital downloads for sale (high-quality MP3 format), and allows artists to keep 100% of their revenue. Very cool! We just got all of our artists' downloadable material on there, and you can check out our page using this link: Science of Sound on MusicFloss.com. The site will go live early 2010.

His & Her Vanities' new album, The Mighty Lunge, has now officially been released! And of course you can purchase it on the Store page! Some reviews have already surfaced and are being compiled underneath the album cover on the Store page. Here are a few of the first comments:

His and Her Vanities, which started circa 2001 in Ricky and Terrin Riemer's Madison basement as a late-night side project to their married-with-children gig... Call H&HV's third album, "The Mighty Lunge," a punk record I guess, but the Riemers, drummer Sara Quigle, and rhythm guitarist Matt Abplanalp decorate their bouncy staccato sound with melodic new wave flourishes, like the rubber band guitars bending around driving, Thermals-esque opener "Hits Like Hail." Far-off pianos chime like glimmers of hope against lead singer Ricky's cries of "When will this cyclone ever end?" on "Wait It Out," a frustrated, hair-pulling pep talk that gets drowned out in the drums and guitars tumbling downhill. It's all coming apart on "The Mighty Lunge," and while H&HV don't arrive at any world-saving epiphanies in the album's brisk 30 minutes, what you do hear hits your weary heart like a booster shot. - Rocksposure (Read full review here)

His & Her Vanities tumbles and screeches into cleverly bent-up pop that shows a clear love for the jarring sounds of Brainiac and Enon. Most of HHV’s tunes, though, keep it a bit more sweet and catchy, not getting overly caught up in mechanical new-wave weirdness. That's especially true of the band's new third album, "The Mighty Lunge." It took five years of on-and-off work to complete...(but) the wait pays off emotionally in some of the band's most direct, accessible, and warm songs to date. - The Onion A.V. Club

On their 2002 self-titled debut album His & Her Vanities were more experimental, creating a record of beautiful, sonic chaos. Two years later they returned with "A Thought Process," which had a more stripped down, post-rock sound in comparison to the debut but never skimped on production. "The Mighty Lunge" is a perfect marriage of those two albums. At times it can be a seven layered cake of post-punk goodness and the next moment you’re attacked with a jagged guitar and bass beat down. We've got a new SOS artist! Madison-based Icarus Himself has become part of our roster. Their first full-length entitled Coffins was self-released just last month, and we are essentially re-releasing it... today! We are very fond of the album and all of its minimalist beauty. In addition to our website, CDBaby and Amazon, most SOS releases (physical copies) are also now available on Interpunk.com, including our new 7-inch featuring Sleeping in the Aviary and The Hussy. Of course we'd love you even more if you purchased directly from us or one of the bands, but Interpunk's cool too. There are now a couple of song samples from the 7-inch up on our Store page for you to check out.

Looks like Sleeping in the Aviary will be hitting the road again in August-September for a 4-week tour through the Eastern half of the country. Booking has just begun so stay tuned for dates! We have a release date for the Sleeping in the Aviary/The Hussy split 7-inch.... March 27th!

So far there are two release shows booked:
March 27th at The Frequency in Madison, and
March 28th at The Hexagon in Minneapolis.

The 7-inch will be available through the bands at shows, at a few independent records stores in Madison (B-Side, Exclusive, MadCity) and through this very website.

It's a little late, but Happy New Year!

I really feel SOS had a great year in 2008! We've been trying to poke our tiny head out into the world more and more the past couple of years, and managed to break through the surface a few times in 2008. We had three releases: Whatfor's "Sooner Late Than Never", Pale Young Gentlemen's "Black Forest (tra la la)"and Sleeping in the Aviary's "Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel", all of which received great press locally, nationally, and elsewhere.

Local Hype: We'd like to thank The Isthmus here in Madison for labeling us "Label of the Year", as well as all three of our 2008 releases making Rich Albertoni's "Top Ten Madison CDs of 2008" list! Decider Madison (Link: http://madison.decider.com) included a track from each release on their 2008 Madison Music Mixtape, and Jesse Russell from Dane101 named PYG's "Black Forest" the "only album he fell deeply in love with this year". Joshua James, also from Dane101, gave PYG the #2 spot on his Top Six Local Releases of 2008, claiming it may have received the #1 spot if his mother-in-law hadn't inquired about PYG's next upcoming show date! Thanks for all the support, Madison!!!

His & Her Vanities is still poking around in the studio. Okay, okay... it's taken over 4 years to finish a new album, but Ricky and i have been busy with this record label and the studio (not to mention our kids) so it's taking us a long time! But we now have 6 songs finished which is a huge accomplishment. And hey, Winter is a great time for working on music cuz it's too flippin' cold to do anything else! So if all goes well, our album should be finished and released sometime this year.

NEW RELEASE! WHATFOR's "Sooner Late Than Never" is out today and available for purchase on the store page! The album is also available at CdBaby, Amazon, local independent record stores (B-Side and Exclusive Company) and will be on iTunes and many other digital download sites soon. We're having a release party at High Noon Saloon in Madison on Friday, May 23rd. SOSOS-008!

Looks like new albums from PALE YOUNG GENTLEMEN and SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY will be coming in early October. Both bands will be touring in support of their records with dates to be determined soon. So check back!

The snow is finally melting, thank GOD!!!

In SOS news... there's finally a name for Michael Sienkowski's (drummer for Sleeping in the Aviary) project, and that is WHATFOR. The name of the album is "Sooner Late Than Never" and it will be released on May 20th. We'll have a bio and some reviews up on the site soon.

As for SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY... well things didn't work out in their living room. They hit some walls trying to record in their house so eventually ended up coming into our studio to record with Ricky again (and it turned out AWESOME!). The basic tracking was done live, and now SITA's got the tracks back at their house to add overdubs and mix.... so things are moving forward. This album is quite a change from the first... it's got a bit of a folk feel, and believe it or not, almost all of the songs run about three minutes or over! Whoah! No release date scheduled yet, but i think we're aiming for this fall sometime.

We've got another thing to report... something else very exciting... we will be releasing the sophomore album from PALE YOUNG GENTLEMEN! We're super stoked to bring them on board! They've been in our studio this week to demo the songs for the new record so that they can iron out all of their ideas before heading into Smart Studios here in Madison to record with Beau Sorenson in April and May. The demos sound incredible, and we're extremely eager to hear what things will sound like after the songs are completed and run through the Smart machine. No release date scheduled here yet either.

We feel very lucky to be associated with these upcoming releases!

Also, we're working with somebody to design a NEW WEBSITE which should be up in the next month or two. Besides a new look, it will also have more features like pages for videos, photos, a mailing list, a music player, etc. Oooooooooooooooooooo.

This is our first post of 2008... HAPPY NEW YEAR! It's effen cold out there!!!!

Just a little bit of news...

It seems as if Michael Sienkowski's album (name of project is still to be determined) is just about all mixed, and we've set a release date of May 20. It's always exciting when an upcoming release is starting to take shape. We'll have more info on it soon.

SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY- Elliott, Phil and Michael have begun converting their living room into a recording zone for their sophomore album in which they'll be recording themselves onto an 8-track. They've just started working on getting some tones and drum sounds, but the record button hasn't officially been pushed yet. Also, rumor has it there will be a new lineup for a couple of upcoming shows they have scheduled...something about an accordian player and a violinist. Hmmmm.......

SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY TOUR STARTS TODAY!
Please go out and show the guys some love! SitA will be debuting some of their new songs from their upcoming sophomore album, which will be recorded upon returning from tour. Elliott will have copies of his new solo album "She is So Beautiful/She is So Blonde" along to sell (way ahead of the scheduled release date of Nov. 6)... as well as his brand new comic book, "The Amazing Adventures Of The Man Who Couldn't Get Cancer!" There is also a new batch of t-shirts heading out with new designs created and screen printed by the band. Lots of NEW stuff, eh?? They even have new haircuts.

Sleeping in the Aviary is Hardly Sleeping
Elliott, Phil and Michael have been busy this summer. Before they leave for another West-coast tour in mid-September, they're trying to finish the tracking for an album full of songs composed by Michael, under a name yet to be determined. Working with Ricky in the SOS studio, many of the songs are coming along nicely, and I'm amazed at how it's turning out. Harmonies, layers of instruments (including cello, piano, tuba, bells, violin, etc.), engaging lyrics, songs that sound like they originated in the '60's… what's not to like? No release date has been scheduled yet until the tracking, mixing, etc. is farther along. I'll be posting some pictures of them in the studio shortly on our MySpace page.

We've got a release coming up in November that is also Sleeping in the Aviary-related. "She is So Beautiful/She is So Blonde" is the name of both the solo project, and the title of the album by Elliott featuring 11 spacey, compelling songs recorded by himself at home during the years of 2003-2007. The album makes me feel like a fly on the wall, listening in on someone writing songs that I shouldn't be hearing. It's fantastic. The songs range from stripped-down guitar and vocals only, to close to 70 tracks of sonic depth in one song alone. Copies will be ready in time for the guys to take to sell on tour, but the official release date isn't until November 6th. We'll be taking pre-orders sometime in October. I'll post another bulletin when everything's set to go.

Also… expect a 7-inch from SitA available in a couple of months as well. AND when they get back from tour in October, they will start work recording their second full-length, which will be released sometime next Spring. Good day!

Sleeping in the Aviary is still on tour, currently out East. Have you seen them yet?? They'll be coming back home in a couple of weeks and then heading into the studio in late June to record Michael's (drummer) solo album, and when that's finished they'll start recording their second full-length (which will be released next Spring). In the beginning of June, SitA is heading to Toronto, Canada for some NXNE action. The festival is June 7-9, and we should find out which date and time slot they'll have soon. So as you can see, between recording, NXNE, some regional shows, yoga classes, growing organic grapefruits and operating their portable dog grooming salon, the guys will be fairly busy this summer.

SitA's debut album, "Oh, This Old Thing?" has been getting some good reviews in various publications and websites. You can see some of these on the Store page... click on "Read the reviews" underneath their CD album cover.

His & Her Vanities and Transformer Lootbag have a show coming up this month. They'll be playing together at the King Club in Madison, WI with Romance Language (Madison) and View-Finder (Cincinnati). Show time is 10PM.

SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY
The debut album, "Oh, This Old Thing?" has finally arrived! We kissed and caressed each little digipak as soon as they got here cuz they looked so happy to be completed and wrapped in cellophane. The CD version is scheduled to be released Feb. 6th while vinyl will take a little longer and should be ready around Feb. 20th... but that doesn't mean we can't take pre-orders!

CDs will be available online through our website here, as well as Amazon, No Karma, iTunes, Saki (Carrot Top's online store), CDBaby, and more as soon as we get it all set up. Distribution to independent record stores by Carrot Top.

SitA will be celebrating their release Feb. 2nd at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI along with The Dials, Pale Young Gentlemen and His & Her Vanities. 18 and up. $5. Starts @ 10PM sharp.
